A War of Error?

For each test in my Government 2302 class we are required to write a short one page essay regarding some topic related to what we have been discussing. In class there has been a lot of talk regarding the recent War on Terror's campaign in Iraq. The following is my attempt to cram into one page, a different view of the war.

A War of Error?

Western philosophy has greatly impacted the direction of our globe. Many ideas have influenced the direction of nations towards glory, as well as towards failure. These ideas have been the subject of trial and error for centuries; very few were arrived at overnight. How quickly it is forgotten the amount of time and effort it took to arrive at those philosophical conclusions. Democracy is one such idea that has undergone several thousand years of philosophical evolution.

Democracy has been an idea ever since the Greek civilization. However it wasn’t until around the time of Oliver Cromwell that we begin to see the idea that man has basic natural rights. Now Cromwell was born in 1599 A.D. however the Greeks had a basic idea of direct democracy in 500 B.C. It took almost 2000 years before we even began to see an application of natural rights and personal freedoms.

It was not until 1787 that America existed with the ideas of government that it holds today. America is still considered to be an infant in the global national scale of things. It is interesting to note that America also is one of the strongest advocates for their form of democracy. In the recent war on terror, America has been introducing new ideas of government to the Middle East region; however these ideas are not always welcomed with open arms.

Why does America believe that the Middle East can arrive at the same philosophical governmental conclusions that is has in the matter of years, when it took 25 centuries to initially arrive at them? One of America’s biggest failures in the war on terror so far has been the idea that it can introduce new ideas, and for those ideas to take fruit and last. It is no wonder why there is such a strong resistance against these ideas, America is asking the Middle East to skip ahead to philosophical governmental conclusion they have not yet arrived at

It feels unfinished. Especially without the period at the end. It seemed as though you have more to say on the subject and it would be nice if you expanded on the paper.

It should be noted that the old guard, those entrenched in authority, were those resisting.

As it ever was, ever it shall be.

People don't like to let go of power, don't you know? You'll find that people are the same -- now, as then, and that the same old guard is present, hoarding their power, trying to reshape the world in their own view...

What else do you expect?
